National und international erregte Jasper de Beijer in den letzten Jahren großes Aufsehen. Seine Arbeiten sind in prominenten Sammlungen vertreten, wie etwa der der Bank of Amerika oder des Gemeente Museums Den Haag. Das Museum for Contemporary Art Denver und das Fotomuseum Den Haag zeigten bereits Einzelausstellungen des Künstlers. Die Art Amsterdam wählte in diesem Jahr eine Bilderreihe de Beijers als Corporate Identity.
Die TZR Galerie Kai Brückner freut sich, seine neueste Werkgruppe, The Recollector erstmals komplett präsentieren zu können.

De Beijers Kunst umkreist seit 2006 die Frage nach Einfluss und Bedeutung von Bildarchiven für die Konstitution kollektiver Erinnerung und das kulturelle Bewusstsein. Bilder, insbesondere Fotografien, werden Ikonen eben weil sie die hierfür konstitutive Kraft haben. Fotografien sind Ausgangsmaterial für de Beijers Recherchen und sie sind bislang immer auch Ergebnis seiner künstlerischen Produktion.

Für The Recollector greift der Künstler auf das 14 Millionen Fotografien umfassende 'Spaarnstad Photo' Bildarchiv zurück, in dem Presse-, Werbe-, und Privatfotografien gesammelt sind.

Aus diesem Fundus sind die Bestandteile der digitalen, 3 dimensionalen (Re)Konstruktion eines Gebäudes, das gleichermaßen wie ein Museum, eine Grabungsstätte, Bibliothek und ein Theater anmutet. Der Betrachter ist eingeladen, mit Hilfe eines PC-Controlers ähnlich heute bekannter Computerspiele durch diesen virtuellen Raum zu wandern und dabei de Beijers Rekonstruktion der (in diesem Fall) niederländischen Kolonialgeschichte zu begegnen.

Alle Texturen, Gegenstände, Bilder und selbst die an diesem Ort wuchernde Natur sind aus Fragmenten gescannter Archivbilder zusammengesetzt. Dank der technischen Möglichkeit, beim Durchwandern der Etagen, Rampen und Treppenhäuser den Kopf zu wenden und den Blick zu schwenken, erscheinen unzählige Ebenen und ein ständig sich veränderndes Bild. De Beijers interaktives Videowerk wie auch die zu diesem Projekt entstandenen Bilder verstricken den Betrachter in einen nie zur Ruhe kommenden Prozess des Erkennens.

The Recollector. Both internationally and in his own country of the Netherlands, Jasper de Beijer has been gaining a lot of attention in recent years. De Beijer's works have been acquired by major collections, including those of the Bank of America, and the Gemeente Museum The Hague, and his art has been shown at the Museum of Contemporary Art Denver, and the Fotomuseum The Hague in solo exhibitions. Recently, De Beijer has been honored by having a series of images chosen as the corporate identity of the 2011 edition of Art Amsterdam.

TZR Galerie Kai Brückner is proud to present the most recent project by Jasper de Beijer, The Recollector, in the upcoming show. De Beijer’s art circuits the question of the impact of photography archives in the constitution of our collective cultural consciousness. Images, in particular?photographic images, tend to become icons because of their especially strong influence on the process of forming our collective history. Photographs are the basic raw material for de Beijer’s research, and up until now they are the final result of his working process.

For his most recent project, The Recollector, de Beijer dug himself into the more than 14 million images of the Spaanstad Photo archive, an archive that carries all kinds of photography including private, documentary, and advertising. The virtual model of a building, somewhere between museum, excavation site, and library, is created from scanned fragments of that unlimited pool of images.?You are invited to walk around in this place to experience de Beijer’s spectacular (re)construction of history, in this case that of Dutch colonialism.?All textures and structures are visually not stabile, changing from one moment to the next with every change in point of view. His interactive video game, as well as the images on the wall within this space, offer a never ending process of cognition.

“Using my source material as a starting point, I try to create a separate world, a realm of the imagination. This gives me the opportunity to orchestrate and dramatize what I have come across in my research and breathe new life into the elements that I find important and exemplary. … The result is a kind of study into the enduring impact of transient images and situations. The main focus of my efforts is to arrive at a kind of essential narrative, where images and associations combine to tell a story that is completely their own. Ultimately, my work constitutes a separate world, where historical reality has lost its context and imagination takes over.”?
